What to do about Ignition Cylinder Problems

Even children know that the car’s ignition is all-important. They watch as their parents insert the key in the ignition and turn it; starting the car. We depend on our ignition cylinders for that sudden burst of energy needed to get the engines going. From a small compact car to tour bus, our intended destination is pointless if we don’t have a working ignition system. Here at Peachtree 24 Hour Locksmith we understand the importance of having a safe and working ignition cylinder. Local Peachtree City, GA residents call us on a round the clock basis to ensure that their ignitions work as they should, so that their vehicles can take them to work, soccer practice, vacations, or on errands whenever needed.

Oh, the timing!

Unfortunately, we find out about an ignition cylinder problem at the last minute. Sure, we insert the ignition key and notice that the car is not starting, but what lead up to that point? By then, we are already fed, dressed, buckled in, and ready to go to our destination. Unfortunately, it is at this point where people panic and either stress out, or frantically call an auto repair man, or AAA for relief. The stress of not being able to go to your planned destination can be great. Maybe you were going to work or out to dinner. You might have had a romantic date planned or maybe you had to pick your child up from school. There’s also the stress of knowing that you now have a repair bill for an unknown amount looming ahead. Add to that, the time wasted and the phone calls that need to be made, etc.

There’s hope

Our recommendation is simple; don’t panic! Just because your ignition system did not start the engine is no reason to get stressed out. The problem may indeed be your ignition cylinder and if it is, we’ll give you some good advice about that. Over the years, we’ve seen a few other situations arise that can give the impression that your ignition system is down when it really isn’t. Check these simple to do items first, and then if you don’t have success, call for help.

Gear check

This simple step is so fast and easy, it’s almost laughable. Check your gear. Your car needs to be in PARK in order to start your car. Being ‘almost’ in park is like being almost pregnant; you are or you aren’t; no two ways about it! Jiggle the gear shift to make sure and if you have to, move the gear out of PARK and then back in. Please, please, please apply your parking brake during any kind of auto adjustment. While this is common sense, it’s surprising how many people skip this step. It may be due to ignorance, laziness or just plain stress but always apply your parking brake when working on your car or making any kind of adjustments. Every year people and pets are injured or killed and property damage occurs when cars roll forward or backward because the simple act of applying the parking brake was skipped.

Next…. check your steering wheel

This step is also simple. Check to see if your steering wheel has locked. Many newer cars will lock up the steering wheel and the ignition if pressure is applied to the steering wheel. This can be done by leaning on it too heavily or by twisting it. All that is needed is a firm twist and not only will the steering wheel be released but the ignition key will be too. What panics many is that while the steering wheel is locked in place, the ignition key will not turn or even come out. In their panic, many calls for auto repair, tow trucks, AAA and other roadside assistance. We know as many call our locksmith shop thinking that they need emergency help.

Is your battery drained?

Another simple and fast check is to see if your car’s battery is drained or not. Apply the parking brake if you haven’t already and then seen if your flashers, windshield wipers, car radio, power windows or headlights work. This one is pretty obvious; if they do, your battery is fine. If not, your battery may be drained and not able to power your engine’s start up. A drained or draining battery can produce many symptoms of ignition cylinder failure so don’t forget to do this important but simple step.

9 ways to improve your home security

BY  · JUNE 12, 2017

We live in very rough times were getting your house broken into is no longer an impossibility, but an event you have to prepare yourself for. We have compiled a few tips on how to better your home security with alarm systems and more, available on Junk Mail at bargain prices.

For the more proactive members of society, housebreaking is an event that can be prevented through firstly understanding how criminals choose homes to break into, how they normally break into such homes and what home security measures one can take to prevent this from happening.
Why is home security important?

Home security becomes even more important when you have a family and children to protect from criminal elements. As a parent you do not want your children to be exposed to criminal elements, so you ideally want to have security measures in place preventing that from happening. This article will help you get a more detailed understanding of steps you can take to improve your security and keep your family as safe as possible in your home.

Some security tips

There are numerous things you can do to make sure your home security is up-to-date and comprehensive enough to keep you, your family and belongings as safe as possible. Let us look at 10 ways you can update your security.

Installing a visual burglar alarm

One thing you can do to keep your home safe is to install alarm systems that alert you when triggered by certain events. You can choose to have standalone window alarm systems that are triggered when windows are forcibly opened, or infrared movement detectors that are triggered by any unexpected movements in the area they overlook.

You could also opt to install magnetic contact alarm systems. These alarm systems are installed on doors or windows and are triggered if the doors are opened unexpectedly. All these systems are great and the alarm you choose to install should really be based on your individual needs, the nature of your home and what you need to protect.

You could choose to have an alarm system that has infrared detectors in the corners of certain rooms in your home, magnetic contact detectors on large windows that burglars could use as entry points into your home and standalone window alarms on smaller windows.

Generally, all alarm systems come with a control panel that stays indoors. This panel helps you monitor all the alarm kits you have installed in your home and give you full control of your entire alarm system, allowing you to activate or deactivate your alarm system with the greatest of ease.

Installing a CCTV camera

Installing a CCTV camera in addition to an existing alarm system would greatly help improve your home security. A CCTV camera could act as a part of a security system. You could use this security camera system to monitor both the inside and outside of your home.

Typically people install a security camera system outside of their yards and around their garage area in order to monitor any strange behaviour occurring outside of their yards that may be indicative of a potential break-in. The great thing about these systems is that a fairly modern security camera system will allow you to monitor any of CCTV camera you have installed through your desktop, laptop, tablet or even smartphone. This would make a great addition to any DIY alarm systems you have in your home.

Keeping your windows and doors locked

This goes without saying, never leave garage doors open or windows open when you are not inside the house. It takes just a few seconds for a potential burglar to notice these things. Do not make your home a target for burglars by making these very basic mistakes when leaving your home unattended.

Installing burglar bars

People have mixed feelings about burglar bars. A lot of people will tell you that these do not stop burglars. If a burglar has set out to specifically target your home for a break-in burglar bars will probably not be a huge deterrent. This is true, however, the point is not necessarily to stop burglars but to slow them down.

The more barriers a burglar will have to go through to get to your prized possessions, the more likely they will simply look for another home to target that is more vulnerable and less of a risk.

Along with burglar bars, security gates also makes it difficult for anyone to make it into your home. They’re a lot stronger, so security gates will definitely discourage anyone trying to make an entry through a door. Solid steel security gates are definitely worth considering, if you’re to make your home safe.
Installing an electric fence

Electric fences, much like burglar bars and security gates act as a deterrent against potential burglars targeting your homes. Before installing these fences you may need to carry out research on security companies that install these fences and find out how much these security companies charge to respond to any alarm triggered by the electric fences.

Installing external padlocks

If you are looking for extra security you also need to look into installing external padlocks to make it more difficult for burglars to break into any of your gates or doors. Again, the intention here is to add as many deterrents as possible.
Security lights

This may seem like an unlikely addition to your DIY alarm system. However, this will actually deter burglars from breaking into your home because burglars generally want to avoid breaking into a very well-lit home. The more lighting a home has, the more likely the burglar can get caught in the act.

Installing window stops

For anyone who is not in-the-know, window stops prevent windows from being opened beyond a certain point. This makes it difficult for burglars to use windows with window stops as entry points as they can only be opened enough only for ventilation purposes.
Fill your trash

Believe it or not, filling your trash helps keep burglars at bay. The reason is mostly psychological. Burglars prefer targeting empty houses or houses with very few people. Having a trash can that is always full signifies to the burglar that your house has many people. The more people you have, the more variables the burglar would have to deal with if they break into your home.

Here are a few more tips to keep your home safe:

• Avoid posting about vacations on social media as this may alert potential burglars that your home is empty
• Make friends with the neighbours and the neighbourhood watch committee if your neighbourhood has one
• Never leave your keys in obvious places

With all the shared tips and ideas, adapt a new approach to your home security. Find the extras to add to your home, advertised on Junk Mail in the Security category. Also look out for security companies advertising their products and services.

August Home paves the way to put a smart lock on doors internationally

Posted  by

August Home — which makes an internet-connected smart lock — already works for most door locks you’d typically find in the U.S. But it hasn’t had a product yet for a different style of lock called the Mortise lock just yet.

That lock represents a smaller amount of the overall market in the U.S., but more importantly, it’s a lock that’s very common abroad. If you’re traveling in Europe and staying in an Airbnb, you’re probably going to find yourself unlocking the apartment with a Mortise lock. So August — which, for now, ships in the U.S. — is launching a new smart lock that cooperates with Mortise locks.

It’s still an important market to capture in the U.S., to be sure. But even with that situation, CEO Jason Johnson said that they’re already seeing August locks pop up internationally. So while that might not be happening in the immediate future, it obviously paves the way to a much larger market when the company looks to expand internationally. The kit is available for $100 in addition to the standard $229 standard price for the August Smart Lock.

“It definitely moves us a step closer to that,” Johnson said. “We don’t ship outside of North America, just because there’s a lot of work to be done to do that in setting up distribution and retail and all the things to support different countries. While we don’t see the exact locations of where our locks are being used, we can see the cities. In fact, August Locks are used in most cities around the world. How they’re doing that we don’t know, people don’t tell us, but they’ve found ways to use the lock. Maybe they’ve installed American-style locks. But this is definitely a step toward making the August lock available to more homes worldwide.”
In addition to that, August is launching a partnership to work with the Logitech Pop, a simple button that allows users to execute various smart-home activities. For Johnson, that involves turning his TV and lights on and off — and locking his door. If you’re lying down for bed and you might have wondered whether or not you locked the door, Johnson said this is at least one way to avoid having to get up and out of bed.
